Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret Death after Distemper Shot
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
This morning my beautiful little sable girl Penelope passed away while at the emergency vet.
Penelope (61/2 years young) had her distemper vaccination yesterday. She was pretreated 20 minutes prior to injection with Dexamethasone SP 4 mg/ML via injection. We then waited 45 minutes and no reaction. I came home with her and while she was sleepy there was no sign of a problem. She drank water, ate and pooped. I went out for several hours and when I came back (11 PM or so) I found her lying on the floor not moving. Her belly was distended and hard. I called the emergency vet who did have someone on who had treated ferrets and off we went.
They examined her and decided to keep her. She got a Buprenex injection (don't know what that is). This was at 1:30 AM. She was unable to use her back legs.
At 6:20 AM They called me said she has gone. I picked her up and she is at my vet's now and he will perform a necropsy on Monday. I am in a state of shock as is her vet. He had no reactions from any of the other ferrets he vaccinated in the last week with the same lot number.
I want to believe that this is just a horrible coincidence but it's difficult. This was a totaly healthy ferret. She received her Lupron inplant same as she has had 4 times before. She also got treated for earmites.
At this point I don't know if I will continue to vacinate. I've shared my life with 10 ferrets over the past 9 years and the reactions seem to become more frequent. I usually wait 18 months between vaccinations.
Any insight as to what was happened to my girl would be helpful
Penelope leaves behind her sisters - JD and Piper (who have never known life without her) and three brothers
Smokey, Freddy and Sam.
I miss you my little one but I know you're with your beloved CB. Know that you will always be in my heart
