Subject: [ferrethealth] Follow up - Ferret dying post distemper vacination
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our vet did the necropsy yesterday about 5 hours after Penelope died.
He is at a total loss as to what has happened. She was filled with
blood and her gums were purple. He said she was filled with gas and
the smell waslike she had been dead for days, not hours. It resembled
bacterial septicemia and termed it catastrophic.
Samples are being sent to pathology and I've asked him to keep some if
someone on the list would like to do something. I want to have
something positive come out of her death, I want us to learn something.
She had the ferret distemper and was pre-treated with a steroid. she
was sleepy after the injection but that was normal for her.
The vet is excellent and ferrt savy. We've gone there for 9 years and
trust the practice totally.
Any thoughts?
Connie
