I'm so sorry you're going through this and for Taz too.

You can check the BG yourself. You go to a pharmacy and buy a Glucometer and test strips. Ask how much the test strips are for different meters. That's where your expense comes in - buying new test strips. They also have expiration dates so you can't buy a bunch on sale and keep for a long time. You might also ask which meter(s) use the smallest blood sample.

Take your meter (when you get one) to your vet and have them check his BG against their meter and also against your meter. That way you'll know if your meter reading high or low and can adjust (metally) for the difference.
