Here are two things that can be done but you seem to know them so I will mention them
for others:

1. Check the humans. Ferrets don't get colds but they do get influenza and they do get
bacterial sinus infections. Long ago we had a nasty antibiotic resistant sinus infection
which kept recurring in one vulnerable ferret and in me. It turned out that my physician
adverse husband had silent sinus infection so when we got cured we wound up reinfected
from hugging and kissing him.

2. Have a culture grown to find out which bacterium is present and what antibiotics will
work.
