You're not using shavings (cedar or pine particularly) for his bedding or litter, are you? I'm surprised someone else hasn't mentioned it, but many, many ferrets (and people, too) have problems with these. They should not be used for ferrets.

If you're not using shavings, and his breathing is normal (i.e. not wheezing or otherwise harsh) other than the sneezing, then personally, I would not worry, but would make sure to take him for that vet visit just to be sure.

Good luck with this guy! As for ferret-proofing, someone once told me that ferret proofing is like child proofing for a two-year-old who can get into a space 1" around. (Crawl around on the floor, look under everything, particularly worrying about the kitchen appliances whether or not the ferret is "supposed" to have access to the kitchen.)
