Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Clarification - HELP - Ring Worm
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I worked on a farm where there were llamas and horses. The cat got
tinea versicolor. This is supposed to be a human-only disease,
supposed to be non-spreadable...but then the kids, mom, and I got it
as well. The cat had huge bald patches on her too.

We were all treated (including the cat) with topical clotrimazole. It
worked at first, then it stopped working. We then switched to topical
ketoconazole. That failed as well.

So I went to my doctor and took Sporanox. It worked but after a few
months (of working on the same farm) it came back, so I tried oral
ketaconazole.

Tinea versicolor is not actually ringworm but it does flouresce under
black light.

None of my ferrets contracted it so hopefully ferrets are immune to
it. For a non-spreadable disease it sure did "spread"....

I stopped working there and after a few months of treatment I haven't
had it for years. The two years I worked there I had it constantly. I
had three separate specialists who all confirmed under microscope that
it was tinea versicolor.
