Subject: [ferrethealth] pigeons as a food item - diseases found in feral (street) pigeons in urban areas
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I concur with the "cook well" for feral pigeons - or buy "squab" from
the supermarket if you feel fresh bird meat needs to be part of the
diet. The wildlife rehabilitation group I volunteer with on the west
coast finds juvenile and adult pigeons that are brought in for
rehabilitation have many interesting diseases and parasites. Throat
swabs and fecals usually show one or more of the following:
Trichomoniasis (the bird type), Candida (yeast), roundworms (several
species), tapeworms, flukes, coccidosis. Some sick birds that die
and are necropsied by a local pathologist have been shown also to have
Chlamydia, Pasteurella, E coli, Salmonella, paramyxovirus, avian
malaria. Some birds are found to have multiple infections.
