I read a book about breeding birds of pray and the two writers flew
their birds to rabbits over working working ferrets. They had
experimented with feeding all the different meats they could find. Not
very scientific but they did it by weighing the birds every day and
weighing everything that was fed. They first used ferrets and birds but
the ferrets took too long to show weight changes. The idea was to see
what meat kept the bird's weight steady with the smallest amount being
fed. They came to the conclusion that quail,. adult mice and small rats
seemed to have the highest source of usable protein. Pigeon, pheasant
and rabbit came next with the other shop bought meats being worst.
Small amount of food giving high energy with stable weight and a low
waste output. Another point is given the choice the birds and ferrets
ate the liver, heart and kidneys first exactly the same as my dogs do
when I give them rabbits to eat.. Chris.
