Subject: [ferrethealth] Probable Adrenal. :-(
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

Perhaps anyone can help or offer suggestions/real world experience for
problems affecting our sweet boy, "Legolas".

He is 4 yr old neutered male sable ferret, 2.5# (normal for him) with
the following signs/symptoms:

- Blood in urine
- in and out of litter box before going or going completely
- he does go, sometimes small amount of urine, sometimes normal. His
poops were somewhat infrequent, then one occasional odd mucus looking
poop - and now seems back to normal
- reduced activity level - seems a bit listless, tired and less
energetic though when we wake him up he plays well with the others
- hair loss - on his chest and back of neck. Almost down to skin.
Seems more than just shedding but not sure about that quite yet. About
a yr. and half ago he did lose all hair on tail but that grew back
beautifully - and vet checked him out - didn't think adrenal at that time
- little sore - like a bite mark by his butt and another by his hind
leg underneath - these probably are in fact bite marks as we do have
several ferrets and a cat.
- seems more itchy than normal - including lower tummy area by hind legs
- showing signs of domination, mating behavior - biting necks -
pinning and laying on top of the others
- slightly enlarged "weenie" opening area
- enlarged prostate? area - right between legs at base of butt - this
was significantly enlarged (more than our other ferrets) and harddish
(maybe not right word) - has gone down somewhat but still enlarged.

Vet has checked him over well and has him on Clavamox starting last
night - glands did not seem enlarged and his blood glucose is OK. We
are awaiting the results of a full blood panel and also an adrenal
panel going to Univ. of Tenn.

For those of you that may be following this or can benefit from an update.

Blood Test Results back - several abnormal readings listed below:

Test - Results - Ref. Range - Units
Hemoglobin - 20.1 (high) - 13.0-18.0 - g/dl
Hematocrit - 57.4 (high) - 43.0-55.0 - %
RBC - 11.70 (high) - 6.5-11.0 - 10(6)/ul
Glucose - 57 (low) - 80-120 - mg/dl
Alkaline Phosphatase - 388 (high) - 15-45 - ul (this seems way high!!)
Chloride - 116 (high) - 90-110 - mEq/L

Also got results of Tennessee Panel for Adrenal

Estradiol - 112.0 (within range) - 30-180 pmol/L
17 OH Progesterone - 2.1 (high) - 0-0.80 nmol/L
Androstendione - 21.8 (high) - 0-15 nmol/L

2 out of 3 clinical signs for presence of adrenal disease

He also had an X=-Ray today (which looked good all around) and a
Lupron shot ($60!!).

In two weeks he will have ultrasound to check adrenals - and also
prostate (which he is having issues with). Hopefully while he is under
for the ultra, if conditions look favorable, have the offending
adrenal removed.

Anyone have any thoughts or helpful hints for me and my poor boy Legolas?

Thanks for caring.
