Since we've broadened the scope, I'll add some food for thought with=20
a little info about trichinosis caused by Trichinella species.=20=20
Georgi's Parasitology for Veterinarians says that carnivores and=20
omnivores become naturally infected through predation, cannibalism=20
and carrion feeding. Human trichinosis usually results from eating=20
raw or undercooked pork, bear or seal. Freezing of pork products at=20
-15=BAC (~5=BAF) for 20 days is considered to be adequate to kill T.=20
spiralis. Note that most home freezers are cooled to around 20=BAF, so =

this wouldn't begin to be adequate. An additional note in Georgi's=20
says that T. nativa, found in bears, can withstand storage at -20=BAC=20
for 6 months! (ref. Pozio, et al, Journal of Parasitology 78:654-659,=20
1992)

[Moderator's Note: the scope was first broadened because some members were=
discussing whether feeding certain wild foods would be safe or pose potent=
ial hazards in terms of diseases and parasites, so this is on-topic and a v=
ery useful addition to the data, but why it is on-topic may need some clari=
fication for those members who did not follow the earlier posts.]
