Okay, first off. it would not have been a cold. Ferrets don't
get colds, which are caused by rhinovirses, but they do get
some more serious things which can look like colds such as
influenza and bacterial sinus infections.
I've known some humans who have had very serious
complications from influenza itself, and have to wonder if
that is possible, or if this ferret might also have some other
underlying health problem which reduced the ability to fight
infection.
For example, adrenal disease can suppress bone marrow. Is the
ferret have ANY of the symptoms of adrenal disease? Adrenal
disease can be present with a lot of symptoms, a few symptoms,
one symptom, or sometimes no symptoms at all.
Is the ferret becoming pear shaped? (thinner in the upper body
and fatter in the abdomen)
Is the ferret losing fur?
Is the ferret engaging in behaviors more often seen in whole
ferrets?
A good list of many adrenal disease (AAE) symptoms can be
found here:

It's not all and I have never encountered the water consumption
one myself, but this could help you and your vet if there is
adrenal disease.
