Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Onions in chicken broth

For many years before warnings came out for
onions and garlic for ferrets we gave them in
shared homemade foods without any problems.
Of course, that was before reports cautioning
people about onions or garlic and ferrets, and
before all the fancy ferrets, and before it appeared
that the rates of adrenal disease and insulinoma
went up markedly -- even when people had informed
vets who could spot those diseases as we did after
our first 8 or so years with ferrets (can't recall just
when). Current ferrets appear to me to be more
genetically vulnerable in the U.S. since fancies
became all the breeding rage.
If the ferret has anything that includes anemia, or
could contribute to or set off anemia, ex. infection,
adrenal disease, lymphoma, etc. then I would absolutely
not give it to avoid a possible cumulative effect.
Otherwise, I'd be careful, but exactly how much onion
requires caution I don't know, and do not know how
much it might vary among ferrets.
