Subject: [ferrethealth] not understanding ferret diagnoses..
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 7year old ferret that has a growth on the inside of her lip.
Vet seems to think it is oral mass squamous cell carcinoma... First
time he extracted cells and sent to lab inconclusive .. then he
removed a piece of the area..

Got results back this afternoon.. did not get to talk to vet he had a
busy long day with sugeries...

The vet receptionist gave me a copy of results , but cannot figure
out if my ferret has this form of cancer...

The is what the letter from pathologist states....
Biopsy
Microscopic Desciption : The examined tissue with no intack
natural surface contains a poorly delineated mass composed of
pieomorphic trabeculae and nests of keratinizing quamous epithelium
chracterized by improper maturation wit dyskeratosis and moderate
anisokaryosis accompained by stromal desmoplasia andchronic active
inflamation. The mitatic index is moderate.

Microscopic Finding : Ubfkaned squamous cell carcinoma , right lower
lip area.

comment squamous cell carcinmomas are locally invasive. The metatatic
incidence is low and generally limited to gegional lymph nodes .
Neoplastic tissue extends to examined argins and complete excision
cannot be confirmed.

So what does this mean.. does my ferret have this form of cancer, is
it treatable or not..

Any information help would be appreciated.. if she has surgery what
is the prognosis of this .. vet did tell me if he did surgery he
would have to dig and go in deep to get as much as he can.. and
sometimes it can lead to deformity...

What it all boils down is the quality of life my ferret will
have...What do I have to look forward too.. has anyone her had to
deal with this kind of cancer of the lip or mouth area...

Thanks so much,
Lani
