Subject: [ferrethealth] Fluid around the lungs
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have an 8 year old male ferret, Rocky. He has had adrenal surgery
to remove both glands within the last 2 years, as well as an enlarged
spleen removed. He is on 0.5 ml of prednisolone (5mg/5ml) and
fludrocortisone (1/8th of a 0.1 mg tablet) daily.

He has had laboured breathing off and on for the last while, and very
dark tarry poop. I took him into the vet today. He did an x-ray
which showed a great deal of fluid around his lungs. They aspirated
some of the fluid so that he would be able to breathe easier. The
cytology of the aspirate did not show an infection. The vet has said
it may be heart disease or it may be a carcinoma somewhere else. He
has suggested an ultrasound to look for tumors. He has also said
that the prognosis is not very good regardless of what the cause is.

So, my question is, what are the possible treatment options for a
ferret this old? I don't want to put him through a whole bunch of
tests, and I think he is probably too fragile for anymore surgery.
Money is also a factor, because his ferret friend also needs adrenal
surgery at this time.

As well, I am wondering if there are any of these diagnosis
possibilities that are more likely or if there are any other
possibilites that we are missing? I want to make the best choice for
him but I don't feel like I have all the information that I need.
