A few years ago, I stepped on one of my ferrets and first thing I felt was denial. I picked him up and checked him all over, his eyes were big. When I stepped on him, I thought I heard a pop. I put him down and he acted normal. I kept an eye on him for the next 15 minutes or so and all of sudden he was laying down not acting right. I rushed him to the local emergency hospital and did xrays and all. His spleen was torn!!!! He was bleeding internally! He was in shock and as they tried to put a catheter in him, they could not find a spot. They had to go into his bone in the hind end of his leg. Emergency surgery was done. The vet had taken the blood that emptied into his stomach and filtered it and put it back via blood transfusion. It was a touch and go situation for a couple days and Cooper kept pulling his IV out. I suggested one of those plastic hoods that they use on dogs, so they cannot scratch, lick the wounds etc. He made it through and I brought him back to the vet a month later and everyone so happy he fully recovered! Cooper J lived another year or two until finally his heart gave out at the age of 8.
I hope this is not what is going on with your ferret. So much internal damage can be done, that one cannot see.
