Liz, you say, the infection is "by the penis". Do you mean near it?
If so then an apocrine cyst or possibly even an infected anal gland
that is creating a fistula draining downward through tissues are
among the things that need to be considered.

If the pus is coming from the penis then where in the Urinary Tract
the infection is happening has to be considered.

If the cause is in the prostate secondary to adrenal disease then why
has Lupron Depot not been considered as part of the approach?

Has the pus ever been cultured to find out what the infective
organism is and what antibiotics will work?

As Patti pointed out-No the sample size would
not effect the results (ie hormone levels) on the Tenn
Panel. Her other suggestion of having your vet call
Dr Oliver at the U of Tenn is also a great idea.
Prostate problems (ie difficulty urinating) are common
with adrenal gland disease in male ferrets.
The sooner treatment is started the better for your ferret.
Lupron and melatonin would be a good start!
If there is bacteria in the urine then adding an antibiotic
is also needed (ie Zeniquin, Baytril,or trimethoprim/sulfa).
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM

You have 2 questions about the 2 most common ferret
problems (insulinoma and adrenal gland disease).
I would not use a high glucose supplement like novasource!
I would recommend waiting a few weeks to a month and rechecking
a fasting glucose. It does not make sense to use a high glucose product
with a ferret that may have an insulinoma!!! If you want a supplement
to use that is safe and beneficial to an insulinoma patient, then I
would suggest using a high protein supplement like Hill's a/d or baby
food (2nd stage chicken and chicken gravy or turkey and turkey gravy).
As far as treating a prostate problem secondary to adrenal gland
disease,
I would recommend Propecia instead of Casodex, but with either
medication
I would definitely use Lupron depot with it! I would also use
melatonin too!!!
Casodex merely blocks the DHT receptor, but Propecia actually lowers the
DHT level! Thus in my opinion Propecia is the better medication to use.
Again I would use Lupron and melatonin with either Casodex or Propecia
in cases with a prostate problem. I would also recommend an antibiotic
too (Zeniqiuin, or Baytril or TMPS).
