Okay, first off, ferrets do not get colds. You can verify this with
one of the very people who are the exact right specialists (ferret
veterinary pathologists) by seeing multiple posts by Dr. Bruce
Williams, such as
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/YG4053
in which he states
BEGIN QUOTE
Ferrets do not get colds. Colds are due to rhinoviruses, which are
species specific virus. Ferrets may get influenza, but not colds.
END QUOTE
Ferrets also get bacterial sinus infections, pneumonia and some other
things.
Yes, this ferret needs to see a vet, and also needs the chest
imaged. There may be cardiomyopathy or other heart disease, lymphoma
in the thorax, a lower respiratory infection, etc. BTW, if there is
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ultrasound may be needed to spot it.
Also, with any cardiomyopathy case ultrasound is important to design
the best medical approach, and we've even had one with pneumonia and
pleurisy who needed ultrasound to best approach her illness sicne her
entire thoracic cavity was so opaque on x-ray.
