Hi Jenn,
when we got our baby kit back in December (he was 3 months old then)
he coughed almost constantly. We took him to the vet who decided it
was a respiratory infection (though he wasn't congested or
sneezing), so he was put on Clavamox for 10 days but it didn't seem
to do much (except now he's got a fetish for bubblegum flavored
things). We couldn't figure what was going on, so we'd just give him
a little 8 in 1 FerreTone (the oil stuff) every evening and the
coughing subsided. Maybe it had to do with a hair ball or a sore
throat or something like that, but now we don't give him the oil
except as an occasional treat and he doesn't cough anymore and is
otherwise healthy. So it may just be the mystery kit cough.

By all means, still get him checked out at the vet. Although
cardiomyopathy is highly unlikely in a ferret so young, it can still
happen, as well as a number of other serious problems, and it's
always better to find out early. Granted, he probably would be
showing other signs of illness, but it's better to be safe than
sorry, I suppose.

Also check to make sure he doesn't have something stuck in his
mouth/throat. Ferrets are notorious for eating things they
shouldn't, and they can often get stuck going down.

Best wishes,
Emily & the kids: Summer, Phoebe, Bailey, Lily, and Linus.
