Subject: [ferrethealth] consensus on ferret environment lighting
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

In the March/April 2007 issue of "Ferrets" in the Vet Q and A
section, someone asked about the "best type of lighting to put in for
ferret". The vet explains that the debate is still out as to whether
or not fluorescent lighting is harmful, and that the light cycle may
be important. THe vet says some believe 12 on 12 off light cylce,
others say as much light as possible. The vet makes NO mention of
absolute darkness.

My question is, isn't the general consensus (at least on this forum)
that absolute darkness (at least as much darkness as possible) is
best when it comes to trying to prevent adrenal cancer?

I guess I
feel like I had seeing mixed messages in the ferret community, and
would like to know what people think. To quote a previous post from
Sukie about cause of adrenal disease (April 2006) "Yes, after all of
these years it is no longer just a hypothesis. The gaps have been
filled. Things which cause a persistent increase in the production of
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) do cause adrenal disease. Some factors which
are involved are neutering and too little complete darkness (which
equals too little melatonin)."

I think I am going to write in to Ferrets magazine to bring about
that point. People that don't know about this forum may look to that
magazine for help, and they should know all the opinions that are out
there on that issue. Knowledge is power!

[Moderator's Note: What I think is happening is that there is some
confusion but I may be reading this wrong. *Only* darkness is *not*
what is recommended. What is recommended here is to have areas like
nesting boxes or bedding under furniture that provide complete darkness
always available, or other ways of having a certain number of hours of
complete darkness with an aim of trying to simulate winter number of
darkness hours. For example:

Speaking just for myself here (Sukie):
Different people have different points where they are happy with the data.
For me personally, independent confirmation of each part of a hypothesis
appearing in a juried publication is usually enough. Others are happy with
less and others want more. --SDC ]
