Depending on the hairloss pattern (at the base only, all over, tip
only) adrenal disease is a definate possibility. The tenessee panel is
a test (albeit expensive) that can be done to look at endocrine levels
indicative of adrenal carcinoma. You have a few options (surgery,
melatonin implants, lupron, etc...) if it is adrenal, depending on her
health. If she is chewing her tail, it may be itchy... you can try an
oatmeal based shampoo, or some other skin soothing shampoo (vets have a
wonderful perscription shampoo called Epi-soothe). That may help if it
is a skin issue. I have also heard acne face wash works for "rat tail"
(ferrets with hair loss over the entire tail, with orange/black heads).
It is hard to know what to say without seeing it myself if you know
what I mean. You should really get the two of them to a vet for a
complete checkup (which it sounds like you plan to do). It never hurts
to have a full CBC done (a CBC won't tell you if it is adrenal though).
Even if they are healthy, it gives you baseline values so that you will
have an easier time knowing when things are wrong in the future. If
that is too expensive, the least I would do is a glucose check.
Insulinoma can begin to appear at age three, and again, it is great to
have a baseline.
Best of luck to you!
