I would just like to add that my own personal inclination is also to think that the breeding for
fancies has increased the tendency toward certain health problems in ferrets. Now, I certainly
could be wrong. Nothing is demonstrated until it really is demonstrated and survives
rigorous challenge. As Feynman so wisely wrote, "It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory
is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong." So,
take this with a grain of salt, and remember that even those vets who were seeing ferrets
decades ago often did not recognize some of the common ferret health problems. Still, even
just thinking in terms of symptoms encountered it does seem like some things, including
adrenal disease, were extremely rarer back in the first decade when Steve and I had ferrets,
back when fancies were almost never seen.

This is why I am so glad that Dr. Michelle Hawkins and her team are making the first inroads
into studying possible genetic vulnerabilities in ferrets.

(When I think of how rapid the progress has been in ferret health in the last decade compared
to the years before I am astounded.)
