Subject: [ferrethealth] Deformed Pancreas?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My 4.5 yr old boy was recently diagnosed with Insulinoma.
The diagnosis was based on a very low BG and a mass on the left limb of
his pancreas seen by ultrasound. It was stated that this mass was his
Insulinoma.
Surgery to remove the mass was reccomended as the vet did not feel that
my boy was responding well to medical therapy after a two day
evalutaion in the ER.
Yesterday I was phoned mid-surgery and one of the specialists informed
me that the mass was actually not on my boys pancreas but touching it.
They removed it and the vet could not theorize what it is.
The vet informed me that my boys pancreas appeared "fine" and that
prior to surgery his BG was very good, indicating that the pred had
been working well.
The vet asked me if I wished to go ahead with a partial pancreatomy
which would mean removing part of the intestine as well.
I asked if this was normal and was told that it is. I asked what HE
reccomended given the new findings (mass not on pancreas, no other
visible tumors, BG levels being stable) and was told "It's up to you
but we need a decision now".
I opted to not do the partial pancreatomy as it sounded a lot more
risky given the extent to which they wished to remove of his intestine.
After surgery I was phoned again this time by a different specialist.
My boy is recovering well from the surgery but I was then told that the
reason for wanting to take out part of his intestine was because the
pancreas was partially wrapped around it.
Apparently the surgeons were "stunned" by this finding and had never
seen anything like this before.
I was not told of the severity of this situation during the first phone
call.
Please, if anyone can help me to figure out the next course of action I
should take I would be very grateful.
Is removing part of his intestine "normal"?
Is it something that can be done safely?
What could be the possible cause of a deformed pancreas and has anybody
heard of this before?
We will know on by the beginning of the week what the mass that was
removed is.
It was taken off of (or near, he wasnt very clear) a lymph node.
Any ideas of what that could be either??
Any input is appreciated. This is getting very confusing.
