Subject: [ferrethealth] Protein-losing Enteropathy?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Looking for any help or suggestions regarding a sick ferret. Binky
is a roughly 5 year old male. Overall, healthy since surrender last
July. Rt adrenal debulked in July 06. He was treated in January for
Helicobacter.
About 10 days ago he lost weight, refused food unless hand fed,
lethargic, very slightly dehydrated which corrected once he began
eating on his own, but he has a recurrent red bloody, mucousy stool.
Cagemate diagnosed with coccidia, and so all were treated for the 10
days with Albon, ending 4/27/07.
He is now eating well on his own, but not really gaining much weight
considering he is eating 6-8 ounces of high protein/fat chicken gravy
daily.
Stool is varied from 'fairly normal' to 'bloody diarrhea'. Fecal was
clean for coccidia 4/26.
He is getting large doses of carafate which will bring the bleeding
under control part of the time. (Also started on Amoxi) Vet felt he
was in discomfort and added Metacam for pain.
Xray on Thursday didn't reveal any answers: heart looked good,
internal organs looked ok; one kidney seemed larger than the other,
though. No susupicious masses.
Bloodwork results came via phone on Friday: BG = 96
Liver and kidney values within range.
Cloride was high, just out of normal range.
Total Protein was low, just below normal range. (I don't have a copy
yet.)
Vet mentioned 'protein losing enteropathy'. Anyone with any
experience with this that can give some suggestions? Definition seems
to simply be the process of losing protein out of the blood by
leaking into the intestine. Seems more like a symptom than a
diagnosis.
I have a sick feeling this is lymphoma, but if anyone can offer
suggestions or hope to help this guy, I'ld appreciate it.
Thanks,
Julie
