Subject: [ferrethealth] Melatonin versus Lupron Depot versus Adrenalectomy
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a ferret, Norbit, who is approximately 4 1/2 - 5yrs of age. He
has had his left adrenal removed. Norbit is currently taking 0.4cc of
flutamide orally twice daily. A few months ago, his adrenal symptoms
returned and I had him placed on Lupron Depot (1 injection every 3
weeks) as I was unsure whether I wanted to remove the other adrenal
gland. Now I am approaching the end of his course of injections and
need to make a decision about what to do. My primary concern is that
if I remove the right adrenal Norbit will require an additional daily
medication (cortisone or something like that?). My concern with
Lupron is the ongoing cost and the possibility of side effects. This
leaves me with melatonin implants. I would only need to do the
implants once every 6 months from what I understand. This reduces the
stress of having to go to the vet every couple of weeks (that goes
for myself as well as Norbit), the possibility of side effects, and
as I understand it, its more cost effective. I would appreciate any
feedback from those of you who have been in a similar situation -
what worked for you, suggestions on further reading, etc.
Additioanlly, if there are any vets or techs who have experience in
this matter I would love to hear from you as well.

Thank you,
Robert.
