April,

I just went to my regular (very knowledgable ferret vet) vet for
some rabies shots this weekend. I asked him whether rabies or
distemper was the culprit in most reaction cases, and he said the
most recent two he had were to the rabies. we didn't go into
severity or anything, but that confirms that reactions to happen
because of the rabies vaccine.

Also, he mentioned that he had heard/read that some reactions were
caused by the injectable benadryl, and he no longer uses it. He
used to give both benadryl and dex as a pre-treat. He does still
pre-treat with dex. He said he had seen a decrease in reactions
since he stopped using the benadryl and dex combo.

sorry the info is not very specific, but i thought i'd share what we
discussed. none of my ferrets have ever had a reaction to either
vaccination (i've had seven total ferrets)

Hi-thanks for the info; I knew rabies vax reactions happen, but I hadn't heard any other anectdotes from people about the benadryl reaction. Distemper usually is more likely to cause rxns in these guys, but rabies can certainly do the trick, too... I will pass that along to my friend and our vets.

Best,

April (Vet tech and ferret owner)
