Kelsey,
Like any creature, human or animal, there is no guarantee as to what it's life will be like. Some go through life with little to no medical problems and others have multiple illnesses. If you take on the responsibility of being owned by a ferret, you have to be responsible for its medical needs when necessary. That includes keeping its shots up to date and weekly or bi-weekly nail trimming, ear cleaning, and checking teeth and general checking for unusual bumps, lumps and scrapes. Your house or room the ferret is allowed in must be ferret proofed, just like you would do with a human child. If the head fits in, the body will follow. They can climb,
and out run a cat. They are like perpetual two year olds. Into everything. We have nineteen, ages from a year old to eight years old. Five have health concerns and some are not the oldest. All are active and run the hose during the day. They are a lot of work, but the enjoyment is beyond words.
Hope I didn't scare you off of ferrets, but having a ferret is a life long commitment.

Hello,

I'm in the process of researching ferrets as a potential pet. I've
read Ferrets for Dummies and hung out at a few of the local ferret
rescues. I'm curious to know how frequent illness is with your
ferrets? Are you guaranteed to have a very sick ferret? I have seen
how fun ferrets can be, but want to be realistic in my expectations.

Thank you!

-Kelsey
