While it is true that you can get false negatives, it is far more
likely with the Avecon tests then with the CIEP. Even when the virus
is dormant, because it is present, the body will still produce
antibodies.

The Avecon tests (both ELISA and Quick Chek), test for one particular
protein that is only present in the antibody when the virus is
replicating (active). Therefore, if the virus goes dormant for a
period of time, as new antibodies are formed, they are missing that
protein, and so the Avecon tests will not provide a positive result.

The way the CIEP (or CEP) tests are run here in the US, there are
several proteins from the antibody that will cause a positive test
reaction. If any of those proteins are present, the test will give a
positive result. There is much less chance of a false negative, as a
result.

No test is 100% accurate, which is why it is always good to test more
then once. Both tests will at times give either false positives or
false negatives. However, there is a greater chance of a false
negitive with the Avecon tests then with the CIEP test (the test run
by Blue Cross Animal Hospital).
