Vicki, you are very right that any number of things can cause hind
end weakness and paralysis. Last year, there was an excellent
article in Ferrets Magazine by Dr. Sandra Kudrak about all the
different problems ferrets can get that will have hind end weakness
as a symptom. For anyone that can get hold of the article, it is a
good read, and I highly recommend it.

When ADV is a consideration, it is wise to treat it as though it
might be ADV - in terms of quarentine and such. It is always better
to be safe then sorry. But, I really feel the only way to know if it
is ADV is through testing. The symptoms of ADV can vary greatly from
one animal to the next, or even be totally absent. And, most of the
symptoms associated with ADV are also associated with other common
ferret ailments.

Hopefully, it will turn out that Alvin does not have ADV, and
whatever his problem, that it is something treatable.
