Subject: [ferrethealth] Fat female ferret with sudden high temperature and lethargy - causes?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I dropped off my ferret Babs at the veterinarian this morning since
she seemed very hot and was extremely lethargic and reluctant to move.
The last couple of days she has been less active (it's been hot-low
80's - so assumed that was reason) but this am - when it was cool- she
was unsteady, squinty eyed, and reluctant to move. I've been worried
about her obesity but she was still the same wt today - 3.2 lbs- as
on her last vet visit. She's chunky with a large abdomen and rear.
Her history is that she was rescued about 1 year ago. My vet(good
ferret vet) checked her over at that time and said she was probably
2-3 yrs old and apart from being rather fat seemed healthy. (She did
blood work at that time). She had one bad canine tooth that was black,
but the vet said it was dead and apparently not causing a problem. I
was concerned about her size at that time, so the vet Xrayed her and
apparently it was all fat, other organs looked normal.
A few hours after dropping her off, the vet called and said her
problem was a fever - temp was 106 on arrival, and they had gotten it
down to 104, and that Babs was looking better. Her blood sugar and
blood work looked normal, and white count looked good. The vet reminded
me that a few months ago when Babs and my other ferrets were there for
shots that they did not vaccinate Babs at that time since she had a
temp of 104 on arrival at the vet. After everyone else was vaccinated
(and she was kept in a cool area of the clinic)her temp was down to
101. The veterinarian suggested that she may have a coronavirus that
she carries (some cats have something similar) which maybe causes the
symptoms periodically, or that she is having an allergic reaction to
something. She suggested flagyl and baytril just in case it's an
infection.
I have added a new food to their mix recently, so am removing that
particular item. She has a good thick coat- but so does one of the
others. If anyone has a similar experience of an overweight ferret
running a temp either in hot or cool weather with apparently normal
heart, blood and glucose values I would be interested.
