I have just received a message from one of
the experts contacted that this is highly
consistent with rabies, even the pica.
The advice received was to very seriously
consider euthanasia and testing.
Of course, not every animal who fits for
rabies actually has it, and hopefully, that
will not be the case in this situation. Still, the
added testing is important to do if death
occurs in any way (mercy shot or natural).
The person has been directly given than
message and the contact email for the CDC's
rabies branch in case that is needed.
