In the studies on ferrets there were very direct and large amount of the virus given. The
timing that I do know is that death is within 10 days of the ***onset of neural
symptoms***. (It is that rapid death which makes them safer than animals who live longer
with it, but there still is a hypothetical chance of infection spreading from them.)

With humans how soon the infection begins to show in the brain depends on where the
person was bitten (or if the saliva entered the body through mucus membranes (for
instance, by getting saliva with live virus in the eyes) and how much virus entered. A
person bitten in the face will have symptoms much sooner than one bitten in a leg, even
years apart.

How that translates to ferrets, though, I don't know. It is the sort of question the CDC
branch headed by Dr. Charles Rupprecht or an equivalent Canadian zoonotic authority on
rabies can help answer for you. I passed that email address on to you, but don't have the
Canadian info.

Hopefully, it will not be this, but if a mercy shot is given or the little guy passes away then
testing will be safest for everyone else, two and four legged.
