To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

There are many reasons why a ferret may not want to eat and sometimes
it takes time-consuming detective work between the caretaker and
veterinarian to figure it out. A ferret may not want to eat because of
a bad tooth, a mouth sore, sore throat, inflammed gums, upset stomach,
obstruction, kidney failure, tumors, injury, some medications such as
flagyl, change of food formulation, ulcers, stress, depression, istuffy
nose, etc. In my experience when a ferret doesn't want to eat, sub-q
lactated ringers and lots of gentle coaxing will sometimes jump-start
their appetite. Ferrets that have never been syringe (slowly dripping
one drop at a time in the side of their mouth) fed or fed a soupy
mixture may be even more determined not to accept the assisted or
syringe feeding. Gentle finger or spoon feeding may work better for
some. This gives a little more time for the reason to be discovered
while keeping the ferret from going down too far to bring back.
