Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Chance- Bilateral adrenalectomy- final blood values
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Joan,
I am sorry to hear about Chance not making it
thru the post-op period.
>From his blood values: Sodium 157, Potassium 8.2
(Sodium:potassium ratio of 19) he was in an Addison's
crisis. The high BUN and high creatinine are from pre-kidney
changes from the Addison's crisis.
When they go into Addison's disease (hypoadrenal) they need
pred, and percorten-V or florinef. When they go into an Addison's
crisis they need fluid therapy (IV 0.9% NACL), pred or dex, and
percorten-V IM. Usually after a few hours of fluid therapy, the BUN
and creatinine come back down to normal. Death from Addison's is
often from vascular collapse and shock, so fluid therapy is the most
important part of treating an Addison's crisis. SQ fluid (0.9% NACL)
can be used in mild cases, but IV fluid (0.9% NACL) is needed in
moderate to severe cases.
