It entirely depends on the medication itself.

Some should not be given with oils whiles others can.

Some should not be given with water or exposed to saliva, but others can be.

Some should not be refrigerated but others last better when they are and yet others must
be.

Some can not be exposed to high temperatures.

Some can not be exposed to light.

Some can not be taken with certain mineral or vitamin supplements.

Some should not be taken with certain foods.

Some require that no strenuous activity occur during their use to avoid connective tissue
injury.

Some which are safe for humans are poisonous to ferrets.

It is not only standard prescription meds that such considerations exist for, but also for
OTC meds, herbal meds, etc.

Pills of caplets which lack a division line indented in them do NOT have the medicine
evenly spread throughout and those must be crushed and divided, or diluted for giving.

So, there is no rule of thumb that extends over all medications except this:
when in doubt either look it up, read the inserts, or ask the pharmacist or vet from whom
you buy it (and who still may need to look it up).
