White poop is also a sign of gallbladder & stomach/intestinal issues. Dark yellow urine has been a sign of gallbladder/liver problems with two of my ferrets. Liver values were off the chart and bilirubin levels were very high. There was some weight loss, but it was not obvious to me that they were in a life threatening situation until they were near death. Both times I was told by a ferret veterinarian that if I had waited to bring my ferret in until the next day, he would have been dead. One of the signs to look for is near the penis/ vulva area if the skin looks yellow. If this is the case, the condition is already acute and you should take your ferret to a vet who is experiences with gallbladder/liver surgery. Remember you can not come to a conclusion based on your ferret's activity level .... ferrets are known NOT to show symptoms until they are very ill. It is part of their instinct ... from their wild ancestors. If you showed you were sick or wounded ... you became
someone else's meal. My ferret who recently had surgery on january 12th, 2007 ate normally the morning that I took him to the vet, even walked around for some time sniffing here and there and then did his business. Within a couple hours ... literally ... he was in surgery and in critical condition. There was a big chance that he wouldn't make it through surgery and the vet made that clear to me. So, anyone who notices weight loss..... even if less than 100 grams in one week .... take your ferret to a ferret vet ..... it may save his/ her life.
It turned out my ferret had multiple gall stones and one had ultimately blocked of the bile duct to the intestine. The ducts were widened en the walls thickened. He also had pancreatitis.
Diagnosis: chronic cholangitis - cholangiohepatitis due to inflammation of the gastro intestinal tract.
Diane ... not a vet but a concerned ferret mom
