Subject: [ferrethealth] Mites and lice - Att Vets, Vet Nurses and other learned members
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I am a member of the ferret.com forum, and have be invited to join
this group for an answer to this problem I of mine.
I really need help regarding lice and or mites.
I have pet mice (which are not fed to my ferrets) and I have 2 ferrets.
This summer has been hot and I have noticed an outbreak of lice (eggs
on the fur and brown lice) on my mice - I treat them with small animal
mite and mange spray, and I wash my hands after tending to my pet mice
and before playing with my ferrets.
I need to know, if mice lice and/or mites (not that I know if they
have mites) can be transferred from one animal species to another i.e
from mice to ferrets.
I have started a monthly treatment for my ferrets using the same small
animal mite and mange spray, just wiping it on their fur just in case,
as a preventative measure. I spoke with the manufacturers of the
product and they assure me it is safe to use on ferrets. I guess by
this post, I am seeking peace of mind to know the truth regarding lice.
PS I look forward to being a member of this new group as well. I have
a 4 year old sable ferret called Wilhemina and a 2 year old black eyed
white called Krystyna.
