Subject: [ferrethealth] Black lump on toe
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

First off, we are seeing a vet this weekend, but I thought I'd check and see if this sounds familiar to anyone, since my new vet does not come across as super familiar with ferrets.

Shortly after Thanksgiving (late November), I noticed a small hard black lump on one of Ronan's toes, covering maybe a quarter of the toe pad. He didn't seem to mind it being touched and he wasn't chewing at it. I figured it was a wait and see situation. The lump, which is very round, stayed about the same size until about ten days ago, when it was noticeably larger. You can also see that the skin had stretched and split across the top, although without any blood or redness or any moisture. The lump is still black, and still round. It covers about a third of the toe pad. He still does not mind having it touched, even to the point of holding that toe pad in the course of nail trimming, and he's still not picking at it. I wish I had a camera capable of taking pictures at this level of detail, but I don't.

Other information: Ronan has severe IBD and is on 1.4ml of pediapred (1mg/ml) once a day, so his immune system is probably somewhat compromised. He has regular overblooms of intestinal bacteria. He did a ten day course of flagyl during the time that he's had this lump, which didn't seem to affect the lump at all. He's currently eating Innova EVO, though I am hoping to start him on a non-chicken food soon to see that helps the IBD at all. He hasn't had any vaccinations in over a year and a half, as he hasn't really been stable enough at any given time.

Thanks for any ideas,

Regina
