Subject: [ferrethealth] mammary gland tumor and Doxorubicin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 5 1/2 yr. old ferret, Whiskey had 2 adenocarcinomas removed that
were either mammary or sweat gland in origin, per biopsy report. The
oncologist believes they arose from the mammary glands because they
were in the mammary chain and his nipples were swollen when the tumors
were there and now that the tumors are gone, his nipples are not
visible. She can't find any information on mammary gland cancer in
ferrets but she said it is very aggressive in male dogs and cats. She
has had very good success with Doxorubicin in cats and 50% success in
dogs. She doesn't know if it will work in ferrets but feels it will.
Whiskey's ferret vet said mammary cancer is rare in ferrets and advises
that Whiskey get the chemo. Has anyone had any experience with
Doxorubicin for mammary cancer in ferrets? I've been told it will not
make him sick as ferrets do very well with chemo (or at least with
Doxorubicin). I've read on FHL that there may be a connection between
adrenal disease and mammary cancer. Whiskey is losing some hair on his
tail so he is gong to get a melatonin implant. Will that also help if
adrenal disease is contributing or causing his cancer? Please help!
He's my baby and I don't want to lose him.
