Subject: [ferrethealth] mammary cancer in ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a ferret w/ mammary cancer but because she was already over 9
year old I chose not to get it treated. I left her go instead. At
the same time she had brain cancer and her eyes were pressing
outward. Up until the last 5-6 months she was the healthiest, most
active ferret, I had ever rescued (I started fostering her at 6 1/2
years of age and went on to adopt her and her cagemate). When she
first started to go downhill I mistakenly just thought she was
beginning to show her age. When her eyes became affected I took her
in for treatment, there was little we could do at this stage of her
illness and life but she really perked up in the vet's office, so,
like a fool, I took her home thinking I had a medical miracle on my
hands. A couple of days later I took her to the emergency clinic and
set her free.

I was stunned to hear she had mammary cancer and, in fact, it could
only be felt upon palpatation. The vet explained that unless the
mammary glands are removed at some point a ferret that reached the
glorious age of 9 could probably expect it.
