Hi Heather,

prostate problems. So, I researched the information I could find on the
web regarding Propecia and brought the documentation to my treating
Vet. We went with 1mg tablet every 24 hours for 30 days and then taper
as directed. Here's the rub, we couldn't find information on how to
taper off and for how long. Can someone please give us some suggestions?
I don't taper the dose - I just go from 1 mg q 24 hours to 0.1mg q 24 hrs. Haven't had any problems yet.
Here's a brief accounting of his recent history:
August he went in for surgery to have the right adrenal removed and his
enlarged spleen while in there the surgeon found and removed tumor in
his pancreas. We had no idea that he might have insulinoma as his bg
prior to going into surgery was 102. A week after surgery he stopped
urinating and had to be rushed to my regular Vet. They diagnosed him
with a urinary infection and he was on antiobiotics. The items removed
and to be sent for biopsy were lost for a month. The microscopic
findings were 1. Mild to moderate diffuse extramedullary hematopoiesis,
spleen, 2. Adrenocortical adenoma, right Adrenal, and 3. Islet cell
carcinoma, Pancreas. In October his hair that had been shaved had still
not grown back so my Vet and I decided to treat him with the 4 month
Lupron depot and a week after that the 4 month melatonin implant. In
November he was still very lethargic so we did another full blood panel
and discovered that his bg was 36 (Ouch). Anyway, his on .2mg of
prednisolone twice a day. Also, during this period he developed a cyst
on his prepubis that fills with clear fluid. We have been draining it
and it keeps refilling. We are hoping that the propecia may help with
this problem as we don't want to put him through more surgery.
Thanks for any help you can give us,
Heather Draper
I would certainly try the propecia before surgery at this point. Please let us know how he does.
