Well, I don't know much about this, but perhaps parts of this will help:
Calcium aids the absorption of phosphorous across the intestinal walls and I know that if
the dietary phosphorous is too high compared to the dietary calcium that the body will rob
calcium from the bones because the body needs pretty much equal amounts of calcium for
the phosphorous to be absorbed. (This is how too high an intake of meat or of soda pop,
both of which supply high amounts of phosphorous, can decrease bone density. Red
meats and poultry have about 10 to 20 times as much phosphorous as calcium, and fish
has about 2 to 3 times as much.
Phosphorous is present in large amounts in the body and essential for many functions
from muscle contractility to blood pH; you can find large amounts in the red blood cells
and in bones so like calcium it is in regular turnover. It is sometimes supplemented along
with calcium for bone breaks, and for gum and dental disease.
Also, I know that dietary phosphorous can be purposely decreased when kidney disease is
present.
