Subject: [ferrethealth] River - Liver, IBD, Low Glucose
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Hi, I have a 4 1/2 yo male ferret, River. He was taken to the vets the other day for possible mast cell tumors. In deciding on whether or not to proceed with surgery, the vets did some bloodwork on him.
His results came back with low glucose of 30, which I find hard to believe (yes, he is being retested). I believe it could be slightly lowered, but he's no where near being that bad from what I can tell from his activity level.
He also had a high lipase level of 700 (suspecting slight IBD - but no other IBD level indicators were raised), and slightly evevated GGT of 12. I read that was in the normal range of 1-13, but it caused concern for the vet since it was 7 in July and now went up to 12. The only other thing the vet mentioned was that he may possibly have a small stomach ulcer.
In the meantime, I've been doing supplimental protein feedings, and next we have scheduled retesting of the bloodwork and an ultrasound, and possible biopsy of the liver. But from what I have been reading, to warrant a suspicion of liver disease, the other liver values should also be elevated. River's werent, they were normal.
Are we on the right track to do a 2nd bloodtest and ultrasound next? Do you think he should have a liver biopsy at this point in time, or could his slight GGT raised level be from possible IBD or insulinoma? Also, the vet stated he didnt think River needed to be supplimented with anything (Denosyl) for the liver right now, but talked about possibly doing a biopsy? Has anyone used Denosyl, if so, what were the results?
Also, if it is insulinoma, are these 3 levels (low glucose of 30, high lipase, and elevated GGT of 12) stand as a warning sign as to not proceed with insulinoma surgery?
Thanks for any and all input,
Andrea and River
