Also, when dealing with a glucose imbalanced patient, whether it be diabetic
or insulinomic, *always* get a glucose before treating -- hypo- and
hyperglycemia can look similar. The other day we had a diabetic cat come in with a
glucose of 14 (!) (not run on a glucometer). Mom wanted to give his insulin shot
before bringing him to the clinic--if she had done that then the cat probably
would have died before he even got to us. I've seen ferrets on
diazoxide/pediapred combo come in with sky high glucoses. If you treat for the wrong thing,
you can make the situation worse. Must get a glucose first to make sure it's
not too high or low, and then go from there. Fortunately it sounds like Blake
is recovering well.
