Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: difficulty urinating
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Yes, difficulty urinating can also cause difficulty defecating.
(We have two who get cystine stones if we don't carefully
control their diet and they both showed that way at first.)

One inexpensive thing you might want to do is to use urine
pH strips that pharmacies and vets have. If the urine is
alkaline then wonder more strongly about struvite stones.
If the urine is acid then wonder more strongly about cystine
stones.

If there is prostatic inflammation then getting out the bad
adrenal is the best way to go while also treating the prostate.
Adrenal growths are more common than uroliths (stones) in
ferrets.

One thing we have done with some ferrets who MIGHT have
adrenal disease but do not clearly have it is our vet has given a
Lupron Depot injection, but honestly,

*****you don't have that luxury because both urinary and
intestinal blockages are EMERGENCY SITUATIONS that require
immediate care*****.

The ferret needs to see the vet the same day and be examined,
imaged Intestinal blockages do not always show up but
sometimes when they don't the gas they can cause to accumulate
does.), tested, etc.

The ferret may need to empty the bladder by needle to prevent it
from either rupturing or backing up to the kidneys and causing
hydronephrosis. We actually had one who avoided a PU surgery
by having this procedure repeated during his recovery until he
could pass urine on his own again.

Intestinal blockages also can become rapidly fatal without prompt
veterinary care.

So, no matter how you cut it this ferret has to see a vet right away.
