To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

One common problem with made at home foods is too
little calcium and too much phosphorous; that is why
meat-only diets rob the bones and teeth for calcium.
To move phosphorus across the intestinal membranes
an equal amount of calcium is needed and if the
individual doesn't get it in the diet the body will take it
from the bones and teeth. Red meats and poultry have
about 10 to 20 times as much phosphorous as calcium,
and fish has about 2 to 3 times as much.

There can be concerns about puncture of the esophagus
from a sharp piece of bone, or puncture lower down if
the piece moves through too rapidly or is too large, so
it probably makes sense to run it through a sieve to be
safest. If you lose too much you could grind those again
and again as needed, or there are calcium tablets which
you could add while sticking to the recipe formula
proportions.
