Subject: [ferrethealth] Trelstar Depot as a possible Lupron-like drug for adrenal disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have heard from a friend, Dr. Erik Stauber, who is a university
research vet that Trelstar Depot (triptorelin depot) lowers both LH
and FSH output and that it came up in a discucssion he was having
with a research endocrinologist, Dr. Jack Oliver, as perhaps a drug
worth investigating for ferret adrenal growths.

BEGIN QUOTE
TRELSTAR DEPOT is a sterile, lyophilized biodegradable microgranule
formulation supplied as a single-dose vial containing triptorelin
pamoate (3.75 mg as the peptide base), 170 mg poly-d, l-lactide-co-
glycolide, 85 mg mannitol, USP, 30 mg carboxymethylcellulose sodium,
USP, 2 mg polysorbate 80, NF. When 2 mL sterile water for injection
is added to the vial containing TRELSTAR DEPOT and mixed, a
suspension is formed which is intended as a monthly intramuscular
injection.

It *****might***** be an alternative to Lupron.

Sys that it suppresses testosterone. Now, I am going just from
memory here, but aren't the androgens more likely to be increased
when instead of the usual more benign neoplasia there is lymphoma in
the adrenals? If so, perhaps this med might offer some comfort to
those ferrets. It is commonly used for human prostate cancer.

There is an initial testosterone increase before the decrease:

Another possible future med here in the U.S. may be deslorelin
(Suprelorin). Right now it is only experimental here and Dr. Robert
Wagner in PA recently did some work on it. Dr. Nico Schoemaker in
the Netherlands has been working with it a lot. The manufacturer
applied to the USDA about 2 years ago for permission to sell the
right sized depot here in the U.S. for ferret use.
