Subject: [ferrethealth] ANEMIA!!!! was Re: low glucose/novasource 2.0

Well Lord have Mercy if it is not one thing then it is another.
I am hanging in there but now here is a new development:

Primary Vet calls last night to give me results of yesterday's
bloodwork as the rotor was malfunctioning on the machine at his
office-he states he has also been doing some looking through Luke's
bloodwork.

I would like to provide blood work and I will as soon as I can find a
way to present the numbers in a nonconfusing and organized way. Two
different offices with different machines and different normal ranges.
Matter a fact I am not sure what values to present. I have little
experience with Complete Blood Counts

Here is what I am told

Luke's hemocrit has been declining over time.

These are the HCT or PCV for the last 6 blood tests I have (not
including yesterday's)
6/23/06 HCT=31.7%
9/12/06 HCT=42.7%
12/16/06 HCT=32.7%
1/15/07 Office 2 PCV=71 No units given
1/31/07 Office 2 HCT= 28.5%
2/8/07 Office 2 PCV=34 No units given

RBC's

6/23/06= 6.54 10^6/ul, 9/12/06= 8.67 (same units), 12/16/06=7.30
(same units), 1/15/06=??? Office 2 There are three values handwritten
with no units PCV=71, TS=7.3, BC=1, 1/31/06 Office 2 - gives a very
nice printed report this states 5.54 M/ul, 2/8/06 Office 2-
handwritten - no units - three values PCV=34, TS=7.2, BC= looks like .5

I do not have yesterday's HCT or RBC's but will have them fax a copy of
yesterday's blood tests over to me. Whatever blood values are needed -
tell me what you want and I will supply the info- I do not know CBC's at
all.

Vet States Serious Anemia- could be caused by chronic inflamation, the
Adrenal disease, renal disease (news to me) or bone marrow cancer.

I know for a fact that his BUN and creatinine values have been in normal
range with one BUN exception for the last six blood tests (does not
include yesterday's which would be blood test #7) these are from 6/23/06
through 2/8/o7. His Urine Specific Gravity has been in normal range
(for older kidneys) for the 4 tests he has had that test done --the most
recent are 1/8/07=1.030, 1/19/07=1.021, 2/8/07=1.025. BUT
yesterday's BUN 48 and creatinine 1.6 (that much I did get from him
during our phone conversation last night). Creatinine has never been
over o.6 until yesterday. Considering he has had very good Blood Values
for BUN + Creatinine plus he has been able to concentrate his urine fine
to 2/8/07 how likely is the anemia coming from a renal problem? Does
BUN 48 + Creatinine 1.6 = renal failure for a ferret ?(I have a CRF Cat)

The Vet is talking about doing a bone marrow tap. I'm OK with that
(except it is going to be stressful and painful for Luke- so if I don't
have to do it let's not right now) but I think it could be Luke's
problematic right adrenal- Vet talks about blocking Estrogen Toxicity,
it is NONregenerative anemia-he stated perhaps the Casodex I have may
block the estrogen but he needs to check on that. I told him nope
Casodex targets the DHT receptors on the prostate it is devoid of any
other endocrine action (Thanks Dr Murray the Casodex info is permanently
burned into my mind). So he really does not know where to go medication
wise. Well I come to FHL search the archives- learn that anemia caused
by adrenal disease is dangerous, that Arimidex blocks the the hormones
coming from the adrenal gland from producing estrogen and that Epogen or
Procrit can help with produce red blood cells.

If this is an adrenal type anemia will the Epogen/Procrit be effective
if this is Nonregenerative anemia? What would the dose be for Armitrex
and Epogen be for a 3.0 pound ferret? His current meds are Pred 1 ml
every 12 hours (Insulinoma). Proscar 0.2 ml once a day. Yesterday the
Vet suggested adding the Casodex back (he said keep the Proscar)- this
is because Luke is doing some straining and whimpering when urinating
and defecating (yes the prostate problem continues but he has good urine
flow). He did stop whimpering within a couple days of the Casodex and I
made the primary vet aware of this yesterday. So Casodex 0.1 ml once a
day. Also Lupron monthly depot 500 mcg. I just started melatonin 1.5 mg
(3 mg pills are scored crack them in half).

Had a phone conversation with the specialist/surgeon just a couple hours
before the primary vet called last night. We discussed doing some work
on the prostate- primary vet thought perhaps seeing we have to cut him
for the prostate why not make the incision a bit longer- go in for the
insulinomas and debulk the right adrenal. The specialist is well known
for his bilateral cyrosurgery. He said that when he examined Luke on
the 19 of January he was strong enough to withstand the surgery. Well
now with this anemia situation maybe he won't be strong enough. He is
eating like a horse and is more alert and active since the pred for the
insulinoma.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thank You

Deb
