That is a good idea, especially if the amount before the problem was known, but straining
to urinate still indicates a problem which can suddenly block completely, and that is about
as risky as things can get.

Yes, I know that people don't like being worried, but there simply are some things for
which it makes sense to get immediate vet attention and appropriate testing even if the
result comes back as either "false alarm" or as " getting bad but not yet an emergency"
because those things are potentially just too dangerous when they go wrong. Better to
have a bill and inconvenience than a dead ferret.

I think that everyone who has had ferrets in the family for enough years has been in that
spot; I also think that everyone has been in the spot where jumping fast and getting the
right tests saved a ferret's life. Heck, we even had one with severe pneumonia and
pleurisy whose lungs sounded fine but the vet jumped on seeing the x-rays. We brought
her in and had her x-rayed because she was not prone to coughing but had coughed a few
times that day and she also gently took my big toe into her mouth which was something
she only would do when she felt ill.
