Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Imuran Help Needed
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I guess what it ultimately boils down to is to get hands on instruction from your veterinary
professionals and then decide if you think it can be done safely enough based upon your
own knowledge of the ferret and how the ferret behaves for you.

Meanwhile, I will look up some things about Imuran in case they help you because I can't
recall the specifics of how we gave it though I know it was compounded so we have had a
flavor the ferrets liked.

http://www.medicinenet.com/azathioprine-oral/article.htm

says that Imuran should be given with food or milk to reduce the chance of stomach
upset. Does your ferret tolerate and like cream or yogurt? It may be that the med could
be given in that. The pharmacy which provided it should know which types of foods it can
be given in.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a682167.html
also mentions taking with food

as does:
http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/consumers/cmi/i/Imuran.htm

This is the clearest write-up I found:
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001329.html

So far I can not find any restrictions mentioned in terms of types of food it can be given
with so you may be able to give it along with or in a preferred meal or a preferred treat.
(Do ask the pharmacist and do have some hands on instruction time at the vet hospital.)

I hope that some of this is helpful.
