Hello everyone.
I ran into a unique situation last week with one of my little crew.
Snoop (insulinoma surgery in 2005-returning to pred dependage approx 1
year later) had what we could only figure is pancreas failure.
Up until Tuesday evening he was fine (as visual) walked normal etc.
Snoop was on .7cc of pred for returning insulinoma. Tuesday evening
he appeared a little spaced and ground his teeth. I took him out of
the cage with his buddies and put him down for night dinner. He
looked as only I can decribe a little dehydrated. He ground his teeth
and didn't want to eat. I got him to eat enough and gave him his pred.
I took him into Doctor X the next morning. We were astounded to
find that his glucose on the one touch registered only too high.
Doc X put him under and took blood for a serum, gave him some
tagament and some fluids (lupron also). That night Snoopy was alert,
ate gravy out of the palm of my hand and took some more fluids without
a flinch. The next morning he started really pawing at his mouth. I
had tried carafate, pepcid and gave him some more fluids. He could not
pick his body up although sought me out on the bed so I could lay next
to him.
By 12pm he was seroiusly declining (Doc X was not in that day but
was going to go by the office for Snoops results). I made that
heartbreaking decision to have someone help him cross as I knew from
looks things were only getting worse.
Upon returning I recieved a phone call from Doctor X stating that
Snoopies glucose register a whopping 1659. The week prior when I
tested him he was 98. Im shocked. Well, we're shocked that he was not
only not in a comma but still alive and responding.
Im just wondering if anyone else has seen cases like this. Possibly
pancreatic failure or acute pancreitis? I've seen the article in
Ferrets Jan/Feb issue and just wondering if this is possibly what
could have happened so far from surgery.
Im just at a loss and searching for answers of anykind.
Thanks for your help
